Grocery Store Unit

This week we will be finishing our Grocery Store Unit. We had so much fun learning about the grocery store. I took my juniors and seniors to the grocery store earlier this year but I just taught this lesson to all of my students because this is the most common place my students go. I bound all of the pages for the unit into a book. If I can make anything into a book I do. They love books!

This is the first page we did in our book. I make most of the materials I use but I also love to use the materials Breezy Special Ed makes. This is from her Community Places unit. I have several and use them all the time. This gets my students focused on what we are learning about and what we are looking for.

I made a PowerPoint to go with our lesson. We talked about who works at a grocery store, different areas in the grocery store, and other vocabulary. We talked about the produce, dairy, and meat areas so I made this page so they could look through our ads to find the food that goes in that area. We did this with the other areas of the store too.

There were several of these pages that went along with our interactive PowerPoint so they could follow along as they each had a turn to come to the board to find the right answer. They love the interactive PowerPoints but I struggled with how to keep the rest of the class engaged so this helps a lot.

The last page in our book is the grocery list they made. I gave them the store ad for them to go through to find things they buy at the grocery store. This week we will use their list to "go shopping" in the store we are making our room into this week. It will give them practice time and gets them up and moving. These units are so fun for the students and myself! Let us know if you teach community unit.
